The Department of Social Services today launched the “Santa Pola Pride 2025” campaign, which includes various advocacy and recreational activities for the LGBTI population. The major event will be Saturday, June 28, with a popular procession through the city centre followed by a celebration at the El Palmeral Auditorium.
Gela Roche, Councillor for Social Services, emphasised the significance of this year’s campaign: “The majority of homosexuals have almost totally come out.” Families and friends are aware that they are homosexual, and at work, we are increasingly able to inform our coworkers and employers about our weekend activities with our partners. However, one minor gesture remains taboo: holding your partner’s hand.
Many people say they don’t like holding hands in public, and that if they were straight, they wouldn’t do it either. But we know that’s not true; the real reason is that we feel a little ashamed, just because we want to.
This year, Santa Pola will begin the “Hold on to love, without prejudice” campaign to raise community awareness. This campaign attempts to break down this societal taboo and enable gay individuals to feel comfortable walking down the street with their partners as a type of mass therapy.
The group is being asked to clasp hands, snap a selfie, and share it on social media using the hashtags #agarratealAMOR #sinprejuicios #santapola.
“Visibility is dignity, and we want everyone to be visible in small towns and municipalities,” Gela Roche stated during the unveiling of the official poster. The Second Vice Presidency and the Regional Ministry of Social Services, Equality, and Housing jointly fund all activities.
