Officers of the National Police in Alicante have arrested six people, connected to family clans, for allegedly threatening, extorting, and physically assaulting a neighbor. The victim, living in a publicly-owned apartment and dependent on social services, was coerced into borrowing small sums, collectively amounting to €120, only to later be demanded to pay €16,200 in inflated ‘late payment interest’. This draconian practice was part of a scheme by the perpetrators, who engaged in lending at usurious rates within the community. The investigation, which began after the victim’s report, unveiled a pattern of intimidation including death threats, physical violence, and property extortion under the guise of loan repayment. Three perpetrators were apprehended at the second residence the victim had moved to post-eviction, while the others were caught following police investigation. All six, aged between 19 and 46, face charges for their alleged crimes, as the affected woman battled the fright and physical harm inflicted.
