A 21-year-old Elche man has died after running a half marathon. The man crossed the finish line of the city’s world-renown running event on Sunday before collapsing, leaving crowds celebrating the events 50th Anniversary in shock. The runner was rushed to Elche General Hospital after but died not long after his arrival of a suspected heart attack.

More than 3,200 people took part in the event and the warmer than usual weather over the weekend made the race even more difficult and several runners needed medical treatment. The Elche half-marathon is one of the longest running events at this distance and attracts entrants from across Spain and Europe.

Organisers passed on their condolences to the family of the man who lost his life. In a statement they praised the speedy response of the medical emergency services who treated the man and ensured he got to hospital in the shortest time possible.

The Mayor of Elche, Carlos Gonzalez said: “We deeply regret this sad event on such big day during an event that is so loved by the people of Elche. We appreciate the work done by the medical services, in addition to the volunteers, the police, and organisers to help the runner who sadly died.”

The race itself was won by British runner, Ben Connor and the Moroccan, Hilali Siham, in general men’s and women’s classification of the 50th Elche City International Half Marathon.
