The Regional Minister of Public Health has signed the document to begin the expansion work at Vega Baja Hospital in Orihuela. The project has a budget of more than 70 million euros and will to result in considerable improvements to health care in the region. It is estimated that the works will take about 30 months, and it has been planned in such a way that the construction work will not affect the daily running of the hospital or patient care.

The Minister stressed that “after the expansion works, the hospital’s care capacity will increase to 372 hospital beds thanks to the construction of two new annex buildings that will free up care space in the current main facility providing 42 additional beds.”
The Minister said: “We are at a very important moment for the population of Orihuela, since the expansion of the hospital will allow the start-up of two healthcare buildings that will connect with the current one. Services such as outpatient consultations, mental health and general surgery, among others, will be installed in the new facilities, which will have a larger space and better health equipment.”

The Vega Baja de Orihuela Hospital has a constructed area of 36,300 m2, and after the expansion works it will be a hospital centre with a total surface area of more than 50,000 m2, that is, the area is expanded by 14,696 m2 more, which represents a 40 percent more.

The works include the construction of two buildings with the aim of expanding the spaces for outpatient care. The building located on the north site, which will have a ground floor and two higher levels, will house the outpatient clinics, the Day Hospital, Mental Health and the electrical and water installations. As for the building located in the southern area, the major and minor surgery units, endoscopy area and hemodialysis will be located here. It should be noted that this last building will be built near the surgical block, UCMA and ICU, due to their healthcare relationship.

Finally, a platform will be built on the ground floor to connect the exterior accesses to the different buildings and the plot will be reorganised to optimise parking.
