An Albanian hi-tech drug gang that had moved around Europe has been arrested on the Costa Blanca. The criminal gang is believed to have set up shop in Germany, Greece and Spain before moving on to Spain. Properties rented across the Costa Blanca and Murcia were used as marijuana plantations before Guardia Civil dismantled them following a large-scale investigation. Five men and one woman all of Albanian nationality were arrested, with the men being jailed immediately by the Alicante investigating court.

Houses in El Campello, Molina de Segura, and Lorqui were equipped with state-of-the-art technology. Embedded controls were able to switch lights on and off and to regulate the temperature so that the crops had the perfect growing conditions.
The smart use of sophisticated LED lights substantially reduced electricity consumption, which is traditional red flag for authorities that a property is being used to cultivate marijuana.

The hi-tech set-up allowed gang leaders to control the properties remotely and this minimised the need to visit, so neighbours wouldn´t become suspicious of different people going in and out.

Marijuana plants weighing 180 kilos were seized in five raids along with 51 kilos of marijuana buds and €6,700 in cash plus multiple phones and fake identity documents used by the gang members.
