The General Director of Tourism has visited Guardamar del Segura to learn about the main actions being undertaken as part of the city’s Destination Sustainability Plan. The Director explained that “the Vega Baja region has two approved Destination Sustainability Plans, Guardamar del Segura and Torrevieja, jointly granted more than 5.4 million euros.” Both are developing initiatives focused on sustainable tourism. The Mayor of Guardamar took the Director on a tour of the Rábita Califal and the Molino de San Antonio to show the measures being put in place.

The Director highlighted the collective work between the different organisations that promote these plans, including the Ministry, the Generalitat and local entities. Working together and funded through the European Next Generation they support cities such as Guardamar del Segura “to understand an attractive territory from the tourist point of view, where synergies are generated between the sun and the beach with the rest of the attributes, such as the cultural, natural or gastronomical assets”.

Accompanied by the Mayor Guardamar, José Luís Saez, the VIP guest visited the Rábita Califal and the Molino de San Antonio, where the Mayor discussed plans to undertake a comprehensive remodelling of the space.”

The Mayor said: “It is a project that we want to expand and export to other municipalities in the region that also have infrastructures similar to those of Guardamar, thus generating environmental routes that will allow the recovery and the revitalisation of the Segura river.”
The total investment in remodelling the San Antonio Mill, one of the actions included in the Guardamar del Segura Destination Tourism Sustainability Plan, amounts to more than 644,000 euros, and includes a first phase of rehabilitation of the Mill and a second of its interior to include a museum.

Specifically, the Guardamar del Segura Sustainability Plan, with an allocation of 2.4 million euros, aims to boost the destination and complement its traditional sun and beach tourism model through its heritage assets and active tourism, in addition to turning Guardamar del Segura into a smart and sustainable tourist destination, optimizing its management model.
