Beauty Pageant in Torrevieja

Whilst beauty pageants have been filed away in history in many societies, Torrevieja will be the location of a “Fit Model” event – the athletic modelling discipline recognised by the International Federation of Fitness and Bodybuilding -, with I Miss Fit Model Spain that will be held on Sunday, October 1, at the Municipal Theatre.

The competition, which will bring together the best athletes from all over Spain, will directly qualify the winner to represent the Spanish Federation in the prestigious Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic Europe Multisports Festival, which will be held in Madrid, two weeks later.

All participating athletes will meet on Saturday, October 30, at the Hotel Fontana in Torrevieja, to register and size up prior to the competition the next day.

The competition consists of 2 rounds in which the participants show their elegance, beauty and style, both in a swimsuit and in a long gala dress. The winner is the one who obtains the best score from the judges, in both rounds.

Burglar Caught Red-Handed

After an increase in robberies from homes in the Altabix and Travalón neighbourhoods of Elche, the National Police carried out a surveillance campaign in the area, looking for a thief who would jump over the perimeter wall of properties at dawn, or early in the morning, to steal bicycles, scooters, hammocks or any light object.

The surveillance was a success as officers witnessed a man sneak into a home in Altabix, and, minutes later, leave with a bicycle, which he promptly dropped and ran away when he saw the officers.

A chase ensued and the man was eventually detained. The officers were subsequently able to attribute eleven home burglaries, in addition to one crime of theft to the man. He was brought to justice and ordered to be imprisoned.

Postal Result

Residents of Entre Naranjos have cause to celebrate, after the Competitions and Markets Watchdog ruled that their mail must be delivered to individual post boxes at each property, rather than the communal facility.

Correos will have 15 days from the date of the ruling to comply, at a time when residents in other areas are struggling to receive any post at all.

Getting Sporty in La Mata

Work began on Friday on the new La Mata pavilion, with Torrevieja mayor, Eduardo Dolon, visiting the site to oversee the commencement of the construction.

The new sports pavilion is costing more than 5 million euro and should be completed in 18 months.

The centre will be able to host many different sports and will have areas where cultural events can be hosted, with seating for around 200 people.

Rojales Fiestas

Rojales is in fiesta mode, as the patron saint fiestas started yesterday, and will continue until 11 October.

A special booklet has been produced which details all of the events for this year’s Virgin de la Rosario fiesta, which can be picked up from the town hall, and the municipal offices in Ciudad Quesada and Heredades.

Benidorm Police Boosted

Fifteen local police officers from Benidorm took office this weekend in an event that was held in the municipal Plenary Hall. Of them, thirteen are agents who have completed their consolidation process into career civil servants and the remaining two acquire the category of inspector.

The event was chaired by the mayor of the city, Toni Pérez, who highlighted in his speech that the local police officers must be “the friendliest face of Benidorm” and stressed that on many occasions “they are the first contact that a tourist has with our city.” “For this reason,” he continued, “it is in his power to make these tourists feel at home instead of being in a hostile place.”

The mayor has also put the inspectors as “an example of what it means to train and progress within the local police force” while highlighting “the dedication and commitment of all of them.”

Cleaning up Alicante

In the leadup to celebrating the first 100 days in office in the current administration this week, the mayor of Alicante, Luis Barcala, has explained that part of his mandate was to clean up the city, and whilst a new contract for waste disposal has entered into operation, cleaning the streets is part of his priorities.

As such, the mayor has said that those who litter the streets of the provincial capital will face hefty fines, as it everyone’s responsibility to keep the city clean.

Food Fiesta

From September 29 to October 2, l’Alfàs del Pi will be present at the fifth edition of the most important gastronomic fair in the province, “Alicante Gastronómica”, “supporting the business sector and the richness and variety of our products”, according to the Councillor for Tourism Luis Morant, who has encouraged everyone to stop by “not only by the Saborea de la Costa Blanca stand in pavilion 2, where we will be and there will be daily tastings of local products, as well as raffles for typical items from the land, but they must go through the entire area”.

Alicante Gastronómica takes place at the IFA exhibition centre located near to Alicante Elche Miguel Hernandez airport in Elche.

Accountant Sent Down

A man who was responsible for the accounting of a pharmacy in Alcoy has been sentenced to three years and five months in prison for keeping around 160,000 euro generated by the business activity.

The sentence, handed down by a court of the Third Section of the Alicante Court, considers the defendant the author of a crime of aggravated fraud by concluding that he took advantage of the relationship of trust established with the owner of the pharmacy to divert part of its benefits to accounts of which he was the owner.

Child Snatcher in Court

A man appears in court on Monday accused of attempting to take a 7-year-old child from a park in Alicante.

The events occurred on June 15, 2022 when, according to the public prosecutor, the accused approached the minor, who was playing spinning top in the park, grabbed him with both arms and ran away.

The court documents state that several family members chased him until the defendant released the victim when he was surrounded by people.

The Prosecutor’s Office requests a three-year prison sentence for the crime of attempted illegal detention.
