Blunderbuss Drunk Arrested

The Local Police arrested a man who was walking with a blunderbuss inside Santa Pola Castle.

A blunderbuss is a 17th to mid-19th century firearm with a short, large calibre barrel which is commonly flared at the muzzle.

According to police sources, the detainee exceeded the permitted alcohol level and walked with a blunderbuss inside the fortress in the presence of minors.

The agents carried out the relevant checks and police reports, he was detained and, subsequently, the firearm was seized.

Parks for Orihuela

The Councillor for Infrastructure in Orihuela, Víctor Valverde, has announced that the town hall has been granted a subsidy worth more than 600,000 euro from the Alicante Provincial Council, to carry out the comprehensive reform project of the playgrounds in the Glorieta Gabriel Miró and in the Severo Ochoa park, both in Orihuela city.

“This is a very important aid for the Orihuela City Council because it represents 100% of the cost of this project that we will put out to tender in order to improve the condition of these two parks as soon as possible,” the councillor said.

The project is based on environmental respect and on providing both parks with an inclusive nature, “to contribute to children’s and sensory development, to enhance the social and motor skills of users who are between 2 and 14 years old.” Valverde explained.

Computer Thief Caught

The Local Police in Elche arrested a 50-year-old man for trying to steal three computers at the El Sauce shopping centre, home to the likes of Media Markt and Carrefour, after the officers were called in to support a security guard who had also allegedly been attacked by the man.

The security guard had restrained the man prior to the police arriving and explained that the suspect was caught trying to leave the establishment quickly with three laptop computers that he had not paid for. Faced with this situation, an employee stopped the person involved and snatched the computers from him. The individual tried to flee, resisted being detained, and after struggling was subdued, although the security guard suffered minor injuries.

The man was arrested and taken to police stations.

Schools for Santa Pola

The mayor of Santa Pola, Loreto Serrano and the Councillor for Infrastructure, Trini Ortiz, met in Valencia with the general director of Educational Infrastructure, Rafael Valcárcel with the aim of updating the municipality’s pending projects.

According to Serrano, the most important achievement of the meeting is that the bidding for the works of the new Hispanidad school will now be able to begin: “We already have the project drawn up and we are waiting for the Ministry to increase the delegation, because the budget goes from 3 to 5 million euro. The good thing is that we already have the commitment from Education that we can start the tender for the works”.

Likewise, the new IES Gran Alacant school has seen a budget increase from 11 to 17 million euro, so the drafting of the project needs redoing before being submitted to the ministry for extra funding.

Murder Hidden in Alicante

A 52-year-old man has been arrested in Alicante after confessing that he killed his 66-year-old tenant with a knife and then hid the body for almost a month wrapped in plastic bags and covered inside a duvet.

Although the motives for the crime have not yet been confirmed, there was a history of arguments due to cohabitation between the two, according to the National Police.

The homicide occurred on August 29 but was not revealed until the Spanish national called the provincial police station to state that he had violently ended the life of his tenant. with whom he shared a flat and was not in a romantic relationship.

Waddings in Alfas

On Saturday, October 7, a presentation will take place of a new book which will take readers on a pictorial tour of the wedding customs and traditions in Alfàs del Pi.

The book, edited by the Council of Culture and Heritage, includes a total of 450 photographs donated by residents of the municipality, which reflect an intimate and family history, but are also a fundamental source for understanding the most recent history of Alfaz del Pi.

The Alfàs del Pi Council has collected more than 750 photographs dated between 1913 and 1987, images that have enormous value as historical documents, drawing important conclusions about family relationships, the situation of women and the economic and urban development of l’Alfàs.

The Circus Comes to Town

If you’re a fan of spectacular performances, you might want to make a note in your diary for next year, as the Cirque du Soleil returns to Alicante with a new ‘Alegría’.

This show premiered almost three decades ago, in 1994, and the latest version for that anniversary has been reinvented both to enchant a new generation and those who have been before.

Alegría will be in Alicante starting July 16 and running until August 4, as part of the troops Spanish tour that will open Barcelona in March, as well as visiting Malaga in May, Seville in September, and Madrid in December.
