Homeless census begins

On Tuesday night, volunteers were joined by officials to embark on a census of homeless people living in the Valencia region.

This is the third time a count has taken place in certain areas, and this time, as well as focussing on the provincial capitals, will also include other key towns such as Torrent near Valencia and Elche.

The campaign is part of a national initiative to provide an overview of the homelessness situation in the country, an, according to the regional government´s representative, Ignacio Grande, “expand, improve and systematise” the available information regarding homeless people and favour a common methodology so that the data can be comparable between cities.

Solar power plant declined

A solar power plant in San Miguel de Salinas has been rejected by the energy ministry, as the site falls too close to an environmentally protected area.

The Pilar de la Horadada II plant was set on a plot of land in the municipality of San Miguel de Salinas, within the 500-metre perimeter of the protected area of Sierra Escalona.

Sunday shopping schedule

Representative from the regional government and those directly involved in the sector held their annual meeting to decide the Sunday shopping schedule for 2024, as dictated by the Valencia regional law, in which retail establishments are permitted to open.

A total of 11 days were once again agreed, the first being Sunday 7 January, 2024.

Drunk Guardia Civil officer suspension confirmed

The Supreme Court has confirmed the sentence of a four-month suspension from duty for a Guardia Civil officer who left his post at Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernandez airport and was found drunk in his car.

The incident occurred in May 2021, when the officer left his post 3 hours early, and was subsequently seen slumped, in uniform, in a vehicle by a member of the public.

The emergency services were called and attended, and a breathalyser test confirmed the officer was drunk.

His defence was that he was not on duty at the time because he had left his post.

Guardamar spruce up

Guardamar is in the midst of a pre-Christas spruce up, with the town hall planting new trees along some of the main avenues in the town.

In addition, work has begun this week near to the cemetery area, where a variety of plants are to be placed to improve the aesthetics alongside the N-332 main road.

Health minister visits Dénia hospital

In attempt to quell fears of a disaster in the reversion of Dénia hospital to public management, a situation that caused countless problems and expense in Torrevieja, the Valencia regional Minister of Health, Marciano Gómez, visited Dénia Hospital to explain that the process of change of ownership of this Health department, which will be under direct management as of April 30, “will be carried out through a rigorous transition, calm and orderly, in order to guarantee the safety of patients.”

The minister held a meeting with the manager of the Dénia health department, Pilar Navarro, the rest of the management team and professionals of the department, to whom he has informed about this transition process.

As indicated by the head of Health, “the change will be carried out in a planned manner so that it does not impact the quality of care offered to patients and so that it does not affect any of the care services, such as Emergencies, Primary Care, Hospital, etc.”

Tourism for all in Gandia

The Regional Secretary of Tourism, Cristina Moreno, inaugurated the TUR4all Day in Gandia yesterday, an event in which activities related to accessible tourism are developed, focused and oriented towards professionals in the sector.

The TUR4all Day in Gandia was organised by Impulsa Igualdad, former State Representative Platform for Persons with Physical and Organic Disabilities, and Valencian Community Tourism in collaboration with Gandia City Council.

For Cristina Moreno, these sessions “are a crucial step to improve quality and inclusion in the tourism industry” and support the shared commitment of local, autonomous and state entities that “tourism is a universal right and everyone must be able enjoy its benefits”, she pointed out.

Street food in El Campello
