A gang responsible for a spate of bag snatching incidents targeting elderly individuals has been apprehended in the Valencia area. This five-member crew was engaged across Spain and is being held accountable for 106 robberies, alongside the fraud of withdrawing more than €75,000 from bank cards linked to their illicit activities.

The Guardia Civil of Valencia instigated Operation Mavipa in October, propelled by a specific incident wherein an elderly victim’s purse was snatched while she was seated at an Alcasser terrace. Her bank cards were subsequently used to withdraw €1,000. The vehicle employed by the gang was pinpointed with the aid of the Alcasser Policia Local, revealing its presence at the scenes of comparable robberies nationwide. Through their organized logistics and use of false identification, the gang significantly hindered police efforts in tracing them.

A series of raids on four locations resulted in the recovery of numerous stolen items, including €5,270 in cash, 30 mobile phones, two tablets, and various items of jewellery, wallets, and sunglasses. Four women and a man, whose nationalities have not been disclosed, face charges encompassing 106 cases of theft, 26 instances of fraud, association with a criminal group, and the falsification of public documents.

The arrest of this gang marks a significant stride towards mitigating the rising incidences of crimes targeting the elderly, showcasing the efficacy of collaborative police work and the importance of community vigilance.
