El Campello council is setting up additional police patrols to crack down on irresponsible dog owners, as the municipality grapples with 73 tonnes of pet excrement each year. Despite existing fines ranging from €100 to €3,000, the council states that uncivil behaviour persists, tarnishing the town’s image. The decision follows unsuccessful information campaigns and the rapid depletion of 270,000 poop bags from local dispensers. The FCC cleaning contractor encounters 200 kilos of dog waste daily across various localities, chiefly in urban areas, Muchavista, and the northern part of El Campello. The council is revising local ordinances to increase police flexibility in addressing the issue, aligning with last year’s national Animal Welfare Law.
