Because of the weather, Elche cancels tomorrows Carnival

Tomorrow’s Elche Carnival won’t take place. Following the State Meteorological Agency’s (Aemet) announcement yesterday that an Atlantic front will bring ample rain, albeit with moderate intensity, to the entire province of Alicante over the weekend, the celebration of this festival was in jeopardy.
Elche City Council said today that the events scheduled for this Saturday, March 1st, in Plaça de Baix are cancelled due to the forecast of cloudy skies, rain, severe wind gusts, and a drop in temperature to about 13º.
Municipal sources have verified that no other date is being considered to move the event to the upcoming weeks, therefore this is a final cancellation. In this regard, the contest’s awards ceremony, sing-along, photocall with kid-friendly characters, and kids’ party featuring inflatables and workshops will not take place in 2025.
With this choice, Elche joins other Alicante cities like Benidorm, whose festivities have also been impacted by the storm. As a result, the Carnival’s signature colours, festivities, music and costumes will have to wait until next year to once more enchant, delight and have fun in Elche’s streets.

Five arrested in Alicante and Murcia for shoplifting

Five individuals involved in grocery theft have been taken into custody by the Guardia Civil. In the regions of Alicante and Murcia, the thieves were stealing in a number of locations for a well-known supermarket company. The things that were stolen are worth over 8,000 euros in total.
The investigation started after the retail chain representative filed a complaint. The pattern was consistent across all cases: three or four people went into the store, and one of them loaded up a cart with expensive things like canned goods, extra virgin olive oil, sausages, or alcoholic drinks. The last one hurried out of the grocery without paying, and another diverted the attention of the staff.
It was discovered that the same people were responsible for the crimes in multiple towns in Alicante and Murcia after examining the security footage from the impacted businesses. Since the suspects did not live in the residences where they were registered and lacked a stable address, it was very difficult to find them.
Shortly after committing another theft at a store in a suburban neighbourhood of Rojales (Alicante), officers caught two of the suspects off guard and took them into custody. Many of the stolen goods were found at that time and brought back to the impacted business.
The other three were later taken into custody in the cities of Almoradà (Alicante) and Guardamar del Segura. The majority of the pilfered items were sold on. Additionally, the two cars that were utilised in the crimes were taken.
Eleven thefts have been resolved as a consequence of the investigation conducted by the Novelda Civil Guard’s investigation section. The cities of Novelda, Torrevieja, AlmoradÃ, Catral, and Rojales in Alicante as well as the municipalities of San Javier, Jumilla, San Pedro del Pinatar, Cartagena, Archena, and Caravaca de la Cruz in Murcia were the sites of these crimes.

Lithuania fugitive arrested in Elda

A 42-year-old Lithuanian man has been taken into custody by National Police officers in the municipality of Elda, Alicante. For repeated drug trafficking offences in 2016, Lithuanian authorities filed a European Arrest Warrant for Extradition (EAW) against him. Three days prior to the end of the search for him, he was arrested.
The National Police in Alicante were notified that the requesting country had issued a European Arrest Warrant, which was effective from April 2019. Authorities had not been able to determine the detainee’s whereabouts since, according to a statement from Police Headquarters.
The suspected offences took place in Lithuania in 2013. In discrete amounts that were readily hidden among his possessions, the suspect reportedly bought drugs (marijuana) in Spain and brought them to Lithuania for sale to third parties. He sold them in tiny amounts for his personal benefit after arriving in Lithuania.
After hearing about these incidents, investigators started their last search for the individual they were looking for, knowing that the arrest and hunt for his extradition would conclude in three days. On March 6th, they launched a police operation, found him, and took him into custody as he was walking down a street in Elda.
In Lithuania, the detainee faces a maximum penalty of ten years in jail for these actions. The detainee, who had no previous criminal history in Spain, has been taken before the National Court’s Central Investigative Court, which is in charge of handling his extradition proceedings.
In order to execute the arrest of this person, the National Police has placed a strong emphasis on information sharing and efficient cooperation between Spanish and foreign law enforcement.

Clocks go forward one hour in the early hours of Saturday/Sunday

The time change will occur this weekend, which is the final weekend of March. In particular, we will need to advance our clocks by one hour in the early hours of Saturday and Sunday, so that at two in the morning, it will be become three.
Data from the Institute for Energy Diversification and Savings shows that electricity consumption only decreases by 5% during daylight saving time, despite the fact that the measure was designed to save energy and electricity by maximising daylight hours.
In any event, this is a modification that occasionally causes confusion even though it is generally accepted by the public. Without a doubt, in this instance, the clocks need to be advanced by one hour, making 2:00 a.m. become 3:00 a.m.
It’s true that the time change has been losing popularity in recent years, regardless of personal preferences. There is growing support from corporations, public agencies, and residents to eliminate the adjustment and establish a clear date. Even the European Union is now involved in this discussion. In 2019, the community body proposed to do away with the time change in a directive. However, the final decision has been forced to be put off indefinitely due to the 27 member states’ lack of unanimity and the unstable international environment.
Spain will keep the time adjustments in place for at least the upcoming year; the dates for the modifications until 2026 were published in the Official State Gazette in 2022. We won’t know until then if our nation will stick to the alternating time or, conversely, establish a firm schedule.
