Easter Week begins Sunday in Elche with the Palm Sunday Procession, a 1997 Festival of International Tourist Interest. The Palm Procession, with hundreds of blanched white palm fronds from the city’s palm gardens carried by the faithful, is the day’s primary event.
An amazing part of Easter Week in Elche is the competition between palmas (white palm arrangements) in size, height, decoration, intricacy, and creativity. White palms are manufactured year-round by craftspeople and famous worldwide.
This religious exhibition is one of the city’s most popular events. The palms are blessed on Paseo de la Estación first. Participants in the procession will go to Diagonal del Palau, cross Puente de Altamira bridge, and continue along Avenida Valencia Region to reach the Basilica of Santa MarÃa.
This morning-early afternoon event is an important element of the Elche fiesta calendar, hence, the principal monuments are normally open to the public for free.
