In Elche, complaints against banks and insurers have increased by 50%

OMIC

In Elche, claims against financial institutions and insurers rise by 50% annually as a result of inadequate information provided at the time of contracting, subpar service, or simply the customer’s failure to carefully read the conditions and believing the coverage does not align with what they agreed to.

Out of almost twenty sectors examined by the Oficina Municipal de Información al Consumidor (OMIC), banks and insurance businesses were among the five most unsatisfied, with 135 and 147 complaints against them, respectively, during 2024. The office head, Torcuato Saavedra, explains some details that cause insurers to misunderstand, like the requirement that the customer cancel a service at least one month prior to the policy’s expiration date. “Unfortunately, consumers are not always well informed or we don’t read everything when signing a contract and we don’t realise it,” he says.

Battle of the numbers


They caution you that the insurer will eventually demand payment of that premium for failing to provide legal notice if you chose to return the receipt instead. Conflicts between the two parties frequently occur here, and many people end up having two insurance plans for a year “because things weren’t done properly,” the technician says. The “number wars” between insurers and the dearth of information some businesses provide to entice customers are additional causes of complaints.

There were 1,971 enquiries and 1,438 complaints filed with the OMIC last year; these numbers are declining, having decreased by almost 20% from 2023. According to Saavedra, this tendency may be explained by the fact that consumers are growing more conscious while making purchases and businesses are getting more professional.

The most criticised are telephone providers.


With a total of 265 complaints last year, telephone companies continue to dominate the complaint landscape, as they have for years. Failure to comply with sales conditions is one of the primary causes. “Because what people don’t know is that when you port your phone number, you’re transferring both your landline and mobile numbers, but internet and television services aren’t ported, and the user has to request cancellation; the company can’t.” Previously, complaints were primarily about mobile phone contracts, but now landlines have issues with related services like internet and television.

Because of this, the office advises users to always ask for a copy and to carefully study contracts, “even if they are very tedious,”

The profile of the plaintiff


When commercial visits to homes were permitted, the elderly were the most common application profile because they felt betrayed at home. The population seeking protection from the OMIC is typically between the ages of 36 and 64, and the range has expanded with the advent of new technologies.

Internet-based purchasing


In a single year, 206 more complaints are categorised as “other goods” by this municipal agency. The office claims that the majority of these complaints centre on disagreements about internet transactions, which are likewise becoming more frequent. In order to make sure that the company they are transacting with on a marketplace is the one displayed on the screen and that it is based in Spain or the European Union, they advise customers to review the legal notice or privacy policy before making a purchase.

Festivity


In honour of World Consumer Rights Day, the OMIC and the Department of Consumer Affairs held an information booth in Plaza de Baix this Friday to provide the residents of Elche with free consumer advocacy, training, and advice.

The area’s edil, Inma Mora, accepted the work I do to address the needs and concerns of both consumers and establishments. Taking into consideration that this space, which has six professionals after being reinforced recently with two more technicians, provides consumers with pautas referring to the regulations in effect at the time of purchase or that must be followed by those products to ensure that the consumer has no issues.

Advice Saavedra explained that the focus of this year’s attention has been on helping merchants and distributing hojas of preceptive reclamations that must have all the establishments at the customers’ disposal.

Correos releases a stamp dedicated to Benidorm’s 700-year history

The 700th anniversary of the establishment of Benidorm as a municipality with its own legal entity will be commemorated in history on a stamp issued by Correos, marking the beginning of a new philatelic series known as “New Cities.” The stamp is intended to commemorate the emergence of various Spanish cities during the Middle Ages. Mayor Toni Pérez and the Director of Philately and Institutional Relations at Correos, Nuria Lera, presented the stamp today, the 700th anniversary of the signing of the Carta de Poblament (Town Charter). They underscored that this issue is a mutual tribute to the historical legacy of the city and the postal company.

The mayor emphasised that “stamps are a very representative element and part of our historical memory as a town,” and stated that the process to get here has been a lengthy one. Consequently, he expressed his gratitude to Correos for selecting Benidorm as the site of the philatelic series’ inception.

The mayor elucidated that the endeavour to immortalise Benidorm’s 700 centuries of history on a stamp commenced in 2023 and that “the efforts of José Ivars,” president of the Federation of Philatelic Associations of the Valencian Community and the Philatelic and Numismatic Association of Calp, as well as a member of the Royal Hispanic Academy of Philately and Postal History, have been crucially important.”

In addition to “unifying Benidorm’s 700 years of history with the 175th anniversary of the first Spanish stamp being put into circulation,” Toni Pérez stated that “Benidorm is now part of Coreos’ history.” In his opinion, this stamp also serves as “a tribute to the cultural legacy that lives on, especially through collectors, and to the history of communications in our country.”

The Mayor of Benidorm concluded by advocating for the resurgence of the tradition of writing letters, purchasing stamps, and posting them in the mailbox as a tribute to the ‘700th Anniversary’ and our history. He also paid tribute to Emilio Ortuño y Berte (1862-1936), a Benidorm native who was appointed Director General of the Post Office in 1908 before becoming Minister of Public Works during the reign of Alfonso XIII.

Nuria Lera, the Director of Philately and Institutional Relations at Correos, expressed her gratitude to Benidorm for its support and enthusiasm for this project. She noted that “it is not an everyday occurrence for a stamp from a major city like Benidorm to be presented, much less on the same day and in the same location as the event. Consequently, we are doubly appreciative today.”

Correos also expressed that it is “an honour and a source of pride” to be a part of this day. She also recalled that Benidorm has undergone numerous transformations over the course of these seven centuries to become the beacon of modernity it is today. The Director of Philately and Institutional Relations enquired, “Who hasn’t been to Benidorm at some point?” He also lauded some of the city’s virtues and contended that the presentation of this stamp “should not only be a look back at the past, but an opportunity to look to the present and the future.”

Some information regarding the stamp

Benidorm is the highlight of this special issue, as depicted in a photograph of the city taken from El Castell towards the Poniente area. The image also includes a portion of the municipality’s skyline, thereby combining the old and the new in a single image. This is the first Benidorm, home to some of the city’s most famous skyscrapers. The legend “700th Anniversary of the Founding of Benidorm,” the official “700th Anniversary” logo, and the Benidorm coat of arms are the final elements that comprise the 72,000 stamps created by the postal company. Since April 24th, they have been available for purchase at a cost of €1.85, which is equivalent to the postage for a standard letter or postcard weighing up to 20 grammes and addressed to Europe.

The ‘700th Anniversary’ stamp features a unique format, as it is displayed in conjunction with another stamp that is equally significant: the 750th Anniversary of the constitution of the city of Vila-Real, Castellón. The latter is depicted with an image of King Jaume I, the municipality’s founder, holding his Carta Pobla of February 20, 1274.

Seven centuries of history


Today, May 8, 2025, commemorates the 700th anniversary of Admiral Bernat de Sarrià’s donation of the Carta de Poblament to Benidorm. The document was delivered in Valencia before the notary Joan Cerdà. The boundaries of the municipality, as well as the rights and responsibilities of the new settlers, were established by this legal document. These settlers settled on Punta Canfali, the same location where El Castell once stood, which has since been transformed into one of the most iconic and photographed viewpoints in the entire Mediterranean.

The Carta de Poblament can be regarded as the municipality’s birth certificate, despite the archaeological remains that confirm the presence of previous settlements in the territory that currently occupies the city, the most notable of which is the Roman Castellum of Tossal de La Cala.
The city has experienced a variety of events and vicissitudes over the course of seven centuries, culminating in its status as a globally recognised, distinctive, and prominent tourist destination. Benidorm was once renowned for the expertise of its mariners and the skill of its tuna fishermen, despite the fact that its name is now synonymous with tourism. The most coveted tuna fishermen and second-in-command in the Mediterranean and Atlantic were natives of Benidorm, who piloted the most prominent vessels of the Merchant Navy and held all grades of command and crew.

Benidorm became a significant destination in the democratisation of vacations during the mid-20th century because it made a firm commitment to tourism. It has since reinvented itself to remain at the vanguard of tourism, which is now digital, technological, and sustainable.

Benidorm currently maintains over 60% of its territory as protected and has one of the most efficient potable water networks in the world. In the same year that it commemorates the 700th anniversary of its foundation, the European Community has designated it as a “Green Pioneer for Smart Tourism” destination, a designation that is the result of policies that prioritise sustainability and accessibility.

Firefighters have begun removing the belongings of those evacuated in Elche

Residents of the San Antón neighbourhood of Elche have initiated the evacuation of their possessions in anticipation of the demolition of numerous apartment buildings due to the potential for collapse.

On Wednesday afternoon, the residents of Block 8 of San Antón were the first to retrieve their personal belongings. A team comprised of members of the Provincial Fire Consortium and officers from the Elche Local Police began the process.

Documents, money, valuables, and other personal belongings, such as apparel, have been the only items that those affected have been able to retrieve. They were previously informed that they were unable to retrieve heavy objects, such as furniture or large appliances.

The property recovery operation will persist in the afternoons for the next few days until all the residences in the remaining stairwells of Block 8 in the San Antón neighborhood—stairwells 1, 3, and 7—have been completed.

On April 10th, 61 residents were evacuated as a precautionary measure as a result of a substantial fissure in a neighbour’s residence.

This event “marks a before and after” in relation to San Antón for the mayor of Elche. It is a neighbourhood that is unable to wait for the administration’s pacing, as the lives of its residents take precedence over bureaucracy.

Consequently, the Elche City Council has announced that the application period for financial assistance for families impacted by the eviction will continue until May 14th.

These are two lines of aid, each valued at €120,000, that are intended to cover the rental costs of a new home, with a maximum of €9,600 per household, and for the purchase of furniture, appliances, and apparel, with a maximum of €3,000 per household.

“Applications for aid can be submitted online at the Elche City Council website, sede.elche.es, under the “Application for emergency aid for evacuees in San Antón” section, or in person at the OMAC Digital office, located at 22 Francisco Pérez Campillo Street in San Antón. A Social Action professional is available to assist with the process and provide information,” they explained.

Carlos Mazón, the president of the Generalitat, has affirmed that the Consell will allocate 2.25 million euros for the reconstruction of a building in the San Antón neighbourhood of Elche.

As part of an urgent initiative spearheaded by the Consell, 45 new residences will be constructed, with an investment of up to 50,000 euros per unit, according to the Valencian government’s leader.

Elche companies swindle a million euros in subsidies

A business network in Elche has been dismantled, and four individuals have been arrested for defrauding over one million euros in public subsidies from the Valencian Government and the European Social Fund to promote employment. They spent the funds on high-end cars and used them for unrelated purposes.

The investigators became suspicious when the companies promptly dismissed the contracted workers, voluntarily resigned, or ceased operations.

The fictitious contracts were identified as a result of a complaint submitted by the Valencian Employment and Training Service (LABORA) to the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office regarding potential irregularities.

Public aid was exploited by structured fraud to facilitate the employment of qualified personnel and vulnerable individuals. Despite the initial formalisation of employment contracts, they frequently failed to satisfy regulatory mandates.

The Urban and Economic Crimes Team of the Organic Judicial Police Unit of the Guardia Civil of Alicante has been conducting an analysis of the traceability of the money received for nearly a year. The team has identified transfers between bank accounts associated with the individuals involved and diversions to personal expenditures.

In April of last year, a search of the group leader’s private residence in Elche, as well as certain offices that are still in use in the city’s technology park, turned up €9,000 in cash, a high-end vehicle, and various pertinent documents. The authorities also seized properties and accounts.

The court presented the four detainees and released them after taking precautionary measures against the alleged leader.

They face accusations of money laundering, contract execution failure, membership in a criminal organisation, and subsidy fraud.

The Civil Guard has emphasised the institutional collaboration necessary to combat this type of fraud, stating that “the investigation was conducted under the direction of the Prosecutor’s Office against Corruption and Organised Crime of the Alicante Provincial Prosecutor’s Office, with the collaboration of LABORA.”
