The Costa del Sol is studying the use of seawater in showers and footbaths on the beach

The Association of Municipalities of the Western Costa del Sol has strengthened the processes for using seawater in showers and footbaths on beaches.
This approach already saves drinking water in other parts of Spain, but the regulations enforced by the Coastal Authority in Andalusia appear to be stricter.
Manuel Cardeña, head of the regional organisation, revealed that a third of the Malaga coastline will only reopen for footbaths this summer due to the province’s current hydrological circumstances.
The Axarquía coast will stop showers to maintain the Viñuela reservoir reserves, which are at 50%.
“We are exploring a variety of methods to reduce water consumption at beach facilities.”It’s a way to raise awareness, because the percentage of water consumed during the summer months isn’t as significant as that used for other public purposes,” Careña adds.
The President of the Western Commonwealth advises inhabitants to practise “responsible water use,” particularly after such a severe drought. We don’t know when we’ll have to impose limits again, so we all need to stay attentive. Saving is everybody’s responsibility.”
In this context, numerous coastal municipalities have placed special push buttons that last only 15 seconds, as required by the Andalusian Regional Government. Connecting footbaths to probable seawater pumps or tanks would be an excellent way to reduce water consumption during the summer.
“The regulations are quite complicated, but we will continue to insist. Cardeña concluded that the March rains, which alleviated the province’s dire situation, cannot stop the implementation of measures to improve the situation for future droughts, which are likely to return.

Guardamar analyses tourism demand and warns of a deterioration in the British market

Guardamar del Segura’s tourist strategy remains sensible and sustainable. On May 14th, the Interdepartmental Technical Commission (CTI) reconvened at the Town Hall Plenary Hall. The discussion examined the evolution of tourism demand through 2024, with a focus on the performance of the British market, which is one of the municipality’s primary suppliers of tourists.
The Alicante-based tourist firm Sien Consulting, administering the Smart Office, presented the most pertinent data from the study during the session. One of the most beneficial elements is an increase in visitor arrivals during the low season, which is being driven by the advent of new foreign markets. This strategy promotes deseasonalisation of tourism, which benefits the local economy and broadens the profile of people who visit Guardamar outside of the summer months.
However, the research also identifies an urgent issue: the erosion in the importance of British tourism. José Luis Sáez, the mayor of Guardamar, stated that “it is a priority to further interpret the data to identify the reasons for the slowdown in the British market.”
Guardamar thus underlines its commitment to a smart tourism model that can anticipate changes in travel trends and make decisions based on real data. Institutional coordination and a coordinated approach will be critical in maintaining the municipality’s position as a top tourism destination year-round.

The Military History Museum of Cartagena exhibits an original ‘Enigma’ machine

On Museum Night, the Military History Museum will display an original piece of the legendary ‘Enigma A1242’ message-decrypting machine, which was used during World War II and is a true symbol of the era’s cryptographic ingenuity, in the temporary exhibition ‘Enigma A1242. Espionage and encryption in times of war’.
The exhibition will begin tomorrow, Saturday May 17th at 11:30 a.m. with the lecture “The Enigma Machine, Historical Importance and Operation,” offered by Ángel Tarifa, curator of the show. After that, there will be a guided tour of the exhibition, with free entrance until the capacity is achieved. Ernesto Terry, the museum’s director, said, “this exhibition is a must-see for fans of history, military intelligence, and technology, as it will be a unique opportunity to learn about the history of the Enigma machine through models of other models.”
The Enigma is the best-known encryption machine in history. Arthur Scherbius, a German engineer, invented and patented it in 1918. During the Civil War, the Nationalist side employed approximately twenty units.
However, it is best known for its role in World War II, where it was originally deployed by the German army. It contained over 150 trillion potential combinations, ensuring secure communications.
However, it was eventually found thanks to investigations conducted by the Polish intelligence agencies, who then instructed the French and English services in the cypher system, precipitating the war’s result in favour of the Allies.
