Shopkeeper injured after confronting a robber in Alicante

Last weekend, a shopkeeper at a 24-hour establishment in Alicante was injured after using a stick to confront a man who robbed him with a fake pistol and was compelled to flee empty handed. The suspect, a 50-year-old male who was apprehended by the National Police, was provisionally released yesterday, Thursday April 10th, after appearing before the Alicante duty court.

The incident took place in the central area of Alicante during the early hours of last Sunday, according to sources. The attempted burglary, which involved violence and intimidation, is purportedly the work of a Spaniard who was apprehended less than 48 hours after the incident.

The burglar entered a convenience store at approximately 5 a.m. with a pistol that was identical to the real thing, but it was a blank-firing pistol. He approached the sole employee and directed the weapon at his torso from across the counter after opening the door.

After warning him to “put the money in a bag,” the assailant struck the counter multiple times with the butt of his pistol, causing a credit card terminal to break. However, the clerk, a 20-year-old Pakistani, confronted him a few seconds later and rushed out to confront him with a stick in his hand.

The thief’s getaway

The burglar fled in a hurry as a result of this reaction, an occurrence that was captured by a camera in the establishment. Nevertheless, the assailant struck the victim on the left cheekbone with the pistol after exiting the building, necessitating numerous sutures. The robber then struck the victim with the stick multiple times, striking him in the side, before causing him to flee.

The attacker’s face was exposed, and he lost a pair of headphones that were affixed to his neck during the altercation, which was observed by numerous witnesses.

The investigation was overseen by the Violent Crime Group of the National Police of Alicante, which was able to apprehend the suspect within 48 hours. The suspect, who had a criminal record, was apprehended as he was about to leave his residence in the same city of Alicante. Additionally, a 54-year-old Spanish man was initially apprehended as a necessary cooperator for allegedly providing the perpetrator with the weapon.

The clothing that was worn during the attempted robbery was discovered during a search of the assailant’s residence. Yesterday. Thursday April 10th, the man was brought before a court for robbery with violence, bodily harm, and damage. He confessed to his offences and was subsequently granted bail.

Crackdown on illegal sales in Calpe

As part of a campaign against street vending that will be further bolstered in the spring and summer of 2025, the Guardia Civil and Local Police have deployed over 25 officers and a drone to the beaches of Levante and Poniente.

A police operation was conducted a few days ago to combat the illicit sale and counterfeiting of products by plainclothes and uniformed officers from the Guardia Civil and the Calpe Local Police. The prevention and deterrent campaign against illicit street vending will persist throughout the spring and summer of 2025, and this action is a component of it.

The Guardia Civil officers from the Main Post and the specialised unit PAFIF (Tax and Border Patrol), which monitors borders and controls taxation in our country, as well as the UTAI and USC CALP units of the Calpe Local Police, were involved in the police operation, which was aided by a drone from the UMAC (Calpe Local Police Aerial Means Unit). This police operation, which was conducted on the Levante and Poniente beaches of Calpe, involved over 25 officers from both forces.

In the course of the operation, 180 leather products, 212 T-shirts, 38 swimsuits, 12 caps and 291 pairs of trainers were confiscated, in addition to five vehicles that were purportedly used as warehouses. The prospective market value of all counterfeit items, which includes the value of the immobilised vehicles and the seized materials, is €15,000. The competent authorities were also informed of the sellers who were identified.

The Councillor for Citizen Security of the Calp City Council, Guillermo Sendra Guardiola, conveyed his satisfaction with the positive relationship and spirit of collaboration and cooperation between the Guardia Civil and the Local Police. “The councillor underscored that the fact that both forces are collaborating, despite their differences in resources and efforts, results in heightened safety for Calpe residents and visitors.”

The local government’s dedication to law enforcement is complemented by its efforts to increase community awareness of the risks and repercussions of supporting this unlawful trade, as the municipal ordinance prohibits both the street sale and purchase of these products.

Another man arrested for his alleged involvement in the death of a man during a fight in Alicante

Police sources say that the National Police have arrested a second individual in Alicante yesterday, Thursday April 17th, for their alleged involvement in the death of a man who was stabbed during a dispute near the General Hospital last Friday afternoon, April 11th.

Initially, authorities apprehended a male on suspicion of involvement in this incident, which resulted in a fatality and a knife wound that required hospitalisation. The person arrested is believed to be only 14 years old. The Violent Crime Group of the Alicante National Police Brigade is currently conducting an investigation, and no additional information has been disclosed regarding the identities of those apprehended.

Last Friday, at approximately 6:00 p.m., officers responded to a call and proceeded to an area near Alicante General Hospital. When they arrived, they found two individuals who had sustained injuries from a weapon. One of them passed away, while the other needed treatment in the ICU.

The new leisure area of the port of Torrevieja postpones its opening

The new recreational area Paseo del Mar in the port of Torrevieja has had its opening delayed until next summer.

Each of the establishments requires several months for business adaptation and staff preparation. They could not take the risk of doing so without a specific opening date, and they do not think it’s safe to do so as the building is entirely still under construction.
Franchisees Vips, Ginos, Casa Carmen, Lateral, La Rollerie, McDonald’s, and Starbucks are among the brands that have confirmed their presence in the 21 stores, which have 8,000 square meters of surface area.

Municipal workers, responsible for managing two infrastructures, postponed the inauguration this summer due to the delay. The primary project is the remodelling of the initial section of the Levante dike promenade and its connection to the new leisure area via a pedestrian walkway.

They have initiated the Muelle M’nguez enhancement, a protected element in the General Plan, after a three-month delay. This will allow the discovery of the cliff’s ashlars and the city’s first loading bay, which will be artificially surrounded by seawater.
The concessionaire company has been unable to commence the construction of its pedestrian walkway bridge over the aforementioned pier, which will commence in front of the casino, as a result of the delay.
