As the summer heat gives way to the crisp embrace of autumn, Costa Blanca transforms into a hiker’s paradise for both two- and four-legged adventurers. With golden light, cooler temperatures, and quieter trails, this is the ideal time to grab a leash and go outside.
Here are some of the best dog-friendly hikes on the Costa Blanca, including those near Orihuela and Torrevieja, that are scenic, safe, and paw-approved.

Sierra de Orihuela—peaceful trails with breathtaking views: The Sierra de Orihuela, located just a short drive from Orihuela town, offers a variety of hiking routes suitable for both casual and adventurous hikers. The trails wind through almond groves, pine trees, and rocky overlooks—perfect for a curious dog! Remember to bring water and a collapsable bowl, as there are few natural water sources.
Parque Natural de la Mata, A Lakeside Gem: This salt lagoon, near Torrevieja, is one of my personal favourites. There is a fantastic flat trail ideal for dogs who enjoy a leisurely but scenic walk. The pink of Laguna Salada de Torrevieja makes for a stunning autumn backdrop, especially during golden hour. Just remember to keep your pets on leashes and keep an eye out for flamingos and other wildlife.
El Hondo Natural Park: Located between Crevillente and Elche, El Hondo offers shaded walks, raised wooden paths over marshland, and flat trails, which are perfect for a relaxing afternoon stroll with your fur babies. Autumn brings cooler breezes and fewer crowds.

Sierra Escalona: This lesser-known hiking destination is ideal if you live near Orihuela Costa. With forest trails and some moderate climbs, it’s a more peaceful alternative to the more crowded coastal paths. Look for signs of wild boar, which are more active in the cooler months.
Barranco de Infierno: Also known as ‘Hell’s Ravine,’ this popular trail near Vall de Laguar is a bit of a drive from Torrevieja or Orihuela, but well worth it if you and your dog are experienced hikers. The 6,800 steps carved into the rock create an unforgettable experience. Only for fit and agile dogs. Bring a lot of water, especially on a sunny afternoon.
Coastal Boardwalks: If your pet prefers a flatter route with plenty of sniffing and socialising, don’t pass up Costa Blanca’s seafront promenades. From La Zenia to Cabo Roig and Playa del Cura in Torrevieja, the boardwalks provide sea views and dog-friendly cafes with outdoor terraces. It is always best to check local beach restrictions, as some beaches allow dogs during the off-season beginning in October.

Here’s a recommendation of things to pack for autumn hikes with your fur babies:
- Fresh water and a travel bowl
- Waste bags—always make sure to clean up
- Tick and flea protection, particularly in wooden areas
- A lightweight lead and harness
- A blanket or towel for post-hike cleanup, especially if water is involved!
Autumn in Costa Blanca is a magical time to explore nature with your furry friend. From forested hills to sparkling lakes, there are plenty of trails where wagging tails are always welcome. Whether you’re exploring Orihuela’s rugged sierras or enjoying the coastal beauty of Torrevieja, these dog-friendly hikes will leave paw prints on your heart.
