Many of us are motivated to improve our health and fitness during the summer, whether it’s by swimming in the Mediterranean Sea or basking in the sun on the picturesque Costa Blanca beaches. Gaining muscle and losing fat are two completely different objectives, and you’ll need to approach your training and nutrition accordingly.
Let’s clear up a common misconception: You can’t ‘tone’ a muscle unless you build it first. Toning is usually defined as a combination of muscle gain and fat loss. To gain muscle, your body requires a calorie surplus, which is when you consume more calories than you burn. Combined with resistance training. The opposite is true for fat loss: you must be in a calorie deficit, which means burning more calories than you consume while maintaining as much muscle as possible. So, if you want to look leaner and more defined on the beaches of Benidorm or Alicante, your plan should reflect whether you want to build muscle, lose fat, or do both.

Cardiovascular exercise and weight lifting serve distinct purposes, but both can be useful tools in your fitness journey.
- Cardio exercise, such as running, cycling, or even brisk walking on the beach, is excellent for burning calories and improving heart health. It works particularly well for fat loss.
- Weight lifting, on the other hand, is your best friend for building muscle and increasing metabolism. Muscle tissue burns more calories at rest, making it easier to stay lean over the long term.
A combination of both is ideal, but if you want to sculpt a defined physique, don’t skip the weights—even if you’re trying to lose fat.

If you’re fortunate enough to live near the sea or have access to a pool, you’re sitting on one of the most effective—and underappreciated—ways to stay fit: swimming. Swimming combines cardiovascular and resistance training, as water provides natural resistance for your muscles to work against. It is low-impact, making it appropriate for all fitness levels, and it works almost every major muscle group simultaneously. Swimming, whether you’re doing laps in the pool or diving into the waves, can help you lose fat and tone your muscles all at once.
Macros Matter: Protein, Carbs & Fats. What you eat is equally important as how you train. Tracking macronutrients (macros) is an effective way to tailor your diet to your goal, whether it’s muscle gain or fat loss.
- Protein is essential for muscle repair and development. If you train regularly, aim for at least 1.6 grams per kilogram of body weight.
- Carbohydrates are your body’s primary energy source. Carbs aren’t to be avoided; they’re especially important if you’re swimming or working out.
- Fats promote hormonal health and keep you full. Olive oil, nuts, and avocado are all healthy Mediterranean staples!
Adjust your macronutrient intake based on your goal: more protein when losing fat, more carbs when attempting to gain muscle. It is always recommended to use a macro calculator or speak with a nutritionist or fitness trainer.

Not everyone wants or can go to the gym on a regular basis—and thankfully, you don’t have to. If you live on the Costa Blanca and want to stay cool indoors during the hottest months, home workout equipment can be an excellent addition to your fitness routine. Take it from personal experience. Using a stepper at home, along with swimming, walking, and tracking my macros at home, helped me lose 7.5 pounds in one week. It’s a low-impact, high-efficiency cardio tool that works the legs and glutes, raises heart rate, and burns calories—ideal for fat loss without leaving the house.
Here is a list of additional effective equipment to help you achieve your goals.
- Resistance Bands: Ideal for muscle toning and strength training, they are portable and inexpensive.
- Adjustable Dumbbells or Kettlebells: Ideal for home strength training without bulky equipment.
- Yoga or Exercise Mat: Ideal for core workouts, stretching, and bodyweight exercises.
- Pull-Up Bar: Excellent for developing upper body strength, even in small spaces.
- Fitness Apps or YouTube Workouts: To stay motivated and on track, pair your gear with free guided routines.
Whether you train on your terrace or indoors with a fan, home workouts can help you gain muscle, lose fat, or both—especially when combined with proper nutrition and consistency.

Whether you want to gain muscle, lose fat, or simply feel stronger and healthier, remember that your body is already valuable. The journey is not about striving for perfection; it is about showing up for yourself and celebrating progress, not just aesthetics. Everyone is unique, which is what makes us beautiful. Some people are confident with curves, others with visible abs, but true success comes from how you feel in your own skin. If moving more, lifting heavier, or eating better makes you feel more alive, then you’ve won.
Let your fitness journey on the Costa Blanca be about empowerment rather than pressure. Own your journey and embrace your body. You’ve already started, which is something to be proud of.
