The Valencian Community Transfusion Centre’s Umbilical Cord Bank (CTCV) currently registers 43,522 bone marrow donors and 4,963 umbilical cord blood units.
Last year, 2,288 people registered for bone marrow (haematopoietic progenitor cell) donation. The provinces with the most new registrations were Valencia (1,204), Alicante (840), and Castellón (244). According to biological sex, 773 men (34%) and 1,515 women (66%) contributed to this charity initiative.
Furthermore, since January 1st, 2025, 1,376 new donors have been added, with 865 women (63%) and 511 men (37%). These were distributed by province, with 765 in Valencia, 443 in Alicante, and 168 in Castellón. It’s worth mentioning that the university promotion occurs around the end of the year, which greatly boosts the number of new registrants.
Since the establishment of the Spanish Bone Marrow Donor Registry (REDMO) in the 1990s, over 500,000 persons have registered in Spain. Last year, 3,844 haematopoietic progenitor cell transplants were conducted in the country, with a high number of unrelated donors, highlighting the need for having a large and diversified donor database.
The World Marrow Donor Association (WMDA) reports that there are over 44 million registered voluntary bone marrow donors worldwide, as well as 767,066 units of umbilical cord blood.
A critical treatment for blood disorders and tumours
Haematopoietic stem cell transplantation, often known as bone marrow transplantation, is an important treatment for blood disorders and cancers like leukaemia and lymphoma. The donor and recipient must be immunologically compatible for the transplant to be successful, making it difficult to obtain suitable bone marrow. As a result, each additional donor has the potential to save lives.
To register for REDMO, you must be between 18 and 40 years old and free of any serious or communicable disorders. Furthermore, donating umbilical cord blood is a safe, straightforward, and painless procedure for both the mother and the newborn; all that is required is a health screening and informed consent.
The Valencian Community Blood Transfusion Centre emphasises the importance of donation because it is an act of life, and each donation can provide the hope that a patient requires to survive. As a result, on World Bone Marrow and Umbilical Cord Blood Donor Day, which falls on the third Saturday of September, we urge reflection and issue a call to action to encourage the public to donate and join this solidarity network.
