The 9th Annual World Breast Cancer Day Race and Walk was announced at a press conference by Irene Celdrán, head of the Department of Health, and Víctor Sigüenza, head of the Department of Sports. They were joined by Conchi Martínez, president of the Orihuela Association of Community Health (AECC), and Paco Belmonte, president of the Tragamillas Club. Rebeca Murcia, the client manager for Caja Rural Central de Orihuela, the firm that sponsored the event, was also there.
This sporting event has been a big part of Orihuela society for many years, and this year it is expected to draw more people than in past years. This year, it will be on Sunday, October 19th, which is also World Breast Cancer Day. It will leave from the Glorieta (Avenida de España) at 10:00 a.m.
Irene Celdrán, the Councillor for Health, stressed how important it is to prevent and find this condition early in the fight against it. She also said, “Taking care of yourself and going to the doctor regularly is not selfish; it’s an act of love and responsibility for yourself and those you care about.”
The AECC (Spanish Association of Cardiologists) has asked people to “stick out their chests” on October 19th and turn Orihuela into a true pink tide to demonstrate their support for patients and their families who are dealing with this condition.
Paco Belmonte also discussed the technical details of the 5K race and walk, noting that the course would be slightly different because of roadworks on the Calvo Sotelo promenade. You can sign up for the race and the walk on the website www.tragamillas.org for a flat price of 10 euros. You may also sign up in person at the Spanish Association Against Cancer’s offices, which are in the Ociopía Shopping Centre, Paula Ópticos, and Urbanfitness.
Belmonte ended by saying, “It’s also worth noting that we have trophies for the winners of the six race categories, and kids 14 and older can join in with their parents’ permission.”
Councillor Víctor Sigüenza from the Department of Sports urged everyone to go out and do sports and take part in this important event, the march.
Lastly, the Orihuela Association of Cultural Centres (AECC) has said that the Orihuela School of Art and Advanced Design (EASDO) will also be involved. They will put on an artistic performance at the Glorieta Gabriel Miró that is related to the fight against breast cancer and their “Fashion Design” degree. This performance aims to raise awareness and name those who have this illness and are still suffering.
