For the first time in the province of Alicante, Torrevieja University Hospital has used radiofrequency thermoablation, a minimally invasive procedure that destroys tumour tissue using thermal energy. Patients treated over the past year have already shown very good results from this technique.
Under ultrasound guidance and local anaesthesia or sedation, a thin needle is put into the tumour for thermoablation. It is possible to completely kill a tumour without surgery by carefully applying heat using radiofrequency or microwaves. It is a safe method that allows for a quick recovery, fewer difficulties after surgery, and keeps the breast looking good by not removing too much tissue.
The breast tumour committee at the centre chooses patients for this treatment, which can be done on an outpatient basis or with a short hospital stay. Specialists from oncology, radiology, surgery, gynaecology, pathology, and oncology nursing comprise the committee, and they evaluate each case individually.
Dr. María José Fuster, who runs the hospital’s Radiodiagnostic Service, says that “thermoablation is a big step forward in the fight against breast cancer because it lets us give some patients an effective and safe treatment with little effect on their quality of life.” The results we’ve gotten so far are really promising.
By using this method, Torrevieja University Hospital demonstrates that it is committed to innovation and clinical research, which makes it the best oncology centre in the province of Alicante.
