Last night, Elche lived up to its reputation as Costa Blanca’s fireworks capital. The city was transformed into a breathtaking spectacle of light, colour, and sound for the annual Nit de l’Alba (Night of the Dawn) celebration. This deeply ingrained tradition, which honours the city’s patron, the Virgin of the Assumption, drew tens of thousands of people for a pyrotechnic display unlike any other.
The festivities began in the early evening, with locals filling the streets and balconies, launching their own rockets and firecrackers as a celebratory prelude to the main event. The air was filled with anticipation, a mix of excitement and reverence for a mediaeval tradition. As 11:15 p.m. approached, the official show began, meticulously coordinated by the renowned Pirotencia Ferrandez. For the next 45 minutes, a stunning barrage of fireworks was launched from various locations throughout the city, painting the night sky with a seemingly endless array of vibrant explosions.

The night’s crescendo was magnificent, as it always is. Palmera de la Virgen went off just before midnight, and all other fireworks and city lights were turned off. The crowd fell silent as the city went dark. Then, from the bell tower of the Basilica of Santa Maria, a massive white starburst firework soared into the sky. It reached a height of 300 metres and spanned an incredible 500 metres in diameter, illuminating the entire area in a brilliant, fleeting moment that felt like dawn. This spectacular finale, symbolising the Virgin Mary’s protective embrace, elicited a collective gasp of awe and a roar of applause.
This year’s Nit de L’Alba was especially grand, involving 2.7 tonnes of gunpowder and 86,000 pyrotechnic units. The meticulous planning and flawless execution of the display demonstrated why this event is a cultural and festive highlight not only in Elche, but throughout the Costa Blanca. It’s more than just a fireworks show; it’s a tribute to a city’s rich history, unwavering faith, and ability to unite for one truly magical night.
