One of the most spectacular midsummer celebrations in Spain takes place in San Juan on the evening of June 23rd–24th. The customs of Guardamar del Segura, which are based on the Playa Centro, combine contemporary town celebrations with ancient fire rites. The local council and the activist group Els Milotxes formally plan a massive communal bonfire, fireworks, a mobile disco, and cultural performances into the early hours of the morning, despite the fact that private bonfires are prohibited elsewhere along the coast.
To make sure you don’t miss anything you might find interesting, I’ve included the schedule for this year’s San Juan in Guardamar below.
Guardamar San Juan 2025 Schedule
June 23rd – La Nit Mà gica (Magic Night)
- 23:30pm – Beach opens; controlled zone set up on Playa Centro by the town and Els Milotxes
- 23:30pm–00:00am – Spectacular show combining DJ sets, dance, fire displays, and water effects
- 00:00 – Fireworks over the Mediterranean, followed by mobile disco and festivities continuing until very late into the early morning.
However, please be aware that the beaches outside the central zone are closed, and according to local ordinance, alcohol and bonfires are strictly prohibited.
June 24th – San Juan Crossing into Saint John’s Day
- The customary “cremà ” (burning) and “banyà ” (soaking by the fire/firefighters) continue into the early hours of the 24th, around 01:00, even though the bonfire is lit late on June 23rd.
To guarantee a safe place inside an authorised area, it is best to get to Playa Centro by 23:00. Beach access will be limited between 21:00 and 6:00. It’s also crucial to remember that neither alcohol nor bonfires will be allowed outside of the approved area, and both civil protection and the local police will enforce these rules.
You won’t need to bring your own firewood because Els Milotxes has already taken care of that. Feel free to bring your own snacks, water and, of course, sun cream! (You’d be surprised.)
A brilliant fusion of fire, folklore, and group spirit, Guardamar’s San Juan celebration is packed into a strictly controlled, exciting evening on Playa Centro. This unique Spanish summer experience combines traditional customs with contemporary celebration. This is a memorable midsummer night, whether you’re enthralled with the “Nit Mà gica” show or soaked after a bonfire in the “banyà .”
