Two men were arrested by the National Police in Elche, Alicante, for stealing more than 50,000 euros from a woman who was not able to properly pay back the debt.
The investigation found that these people lied to her and then used her money to make bank transfers and card payments for themselves.
The police investigation began when the brother of the woman who was not able to speak for herself made a report at the Elche Police Station.
There, she said that someone had used her sister’s illness against her to make several withdrawals and deposits from her bank account and payments with the card that was tied to that account.
Because they were so big, the victim’s brother pointed out two bank transfers of 14,000 and 30,000 euros to an unknown person’s account in his report.
Following these events, the Elche Judicial Police Brigade looked into the victim’s bank account activity and found several transfers and card payments that caught their attention.
The police thought these costs were out of the ordinary for the victim, so they tried several times to find out where all the money had gone and what the victim had supposedly bought with it.
The bank account where the two payments worth 14,000 and 30,000 euros were made was looked at and the owner was found to be the victim’s neighbour.
Because he had a mental disability, this friend took advantage of the fact that he could not legally do anything and tricked him into giving him the money. The officers found this man and arrested him.
A second scam
Officers were able to find a used car shop by following two of the payments made with the victim’s card.
As the police gathered more information at the shop, they learnt that a man had bought a van worth 6,800 euros with the victim.
Not only that, but she paid for the car with her credit card, even though the van was registered in his name. This person wasn’t her neighbour; it was someone else who had lied to her.
When it was finally found out, it was another man who lived in Elche and knew the victim. They found him and nabbed him on suspicion of committing a fraud crime.
The two prisoners, who are from Spain and are 47 and 57 years old, have now been given to the Elche Court of Instruction to be used.
