A group that specialised in cyber-fraud crime like identity theft and document forgery has been broken up by the Civil Guard.
Three people have been arrested in Madrid after an investigation that began with a complaint from a car sales company in August of last year. The company said that it had seen fishy activities going on in dealerships in Elche, Torrevieja, and Orihuela, all in the southern part of the province of Alicante.
The accused fraudsters put up false ads on a real estate website, offering properties on good terms to get people who wanted to rent apartments to fall for their scam. To do this, they gave a lot of personal and financial information to prove they were financially stable. The thieves then used this information to ask for loans and pay for cars.
The group was able to get four cars worth more than 180,000 euros, and they were also trying to get more loans worth more than 300,000 euros. Because the Civil Guard moved quickly, these loans did not go through.
