There are more than 5,000 beds in hotels in Elche, both in the city heart and in the surrounding areas. Almost all of them are booked. Irene Ruiz, who is the councillor for tourism, said that all of the available beds should be taken this weekend, when the Mariological Congress and the Ultrahélike ultra-distance test are held. Additionally, Ruiz said that these events will be added to the “Mystery Man” show or the already sold-out concerts by Marina Reche at the Gran Teatro and Jay-Jay Johanson at l’Escorxador.
Pablo Ruz, the mayor of Elche, said that these numbers show that the city needs more hotels. People like Ruz have said that the local government needs to keep supporting an events policy that brings in tourists and makes hotel chains “set their sights” on the town. In this case, the Mayor said that they ended talks with companies that wanted to move to Elche at the International Tourism Fair, even though Ruz said they were sorry they didn’t have more hotel land.
