The municipality’s two beaches are off-limits to vans and caravans, according to the Elche City Council. Beginning tomorrow the local police officer will notify and caution about the limitations on vehicles larger than 2.2 meters.
In the province of Alicante, signs are being erected near these beaches: in La Marina, on the beach’s access road; and on the Camino del CarabassÃ, next to the hermitage, at the outside of the Santa Pola municipal area.
Accordingly, the goal of banning these cars is to “protect and defend our coastline,” said Irene Ruiz, a member of the Elche Tourism Council. Santa Pola, which has established the same boundaries throughout the Cabo region, is also involved in this concerted operation.
In addition to preventing unlawful camping in places where overnight stays are prohibited, the policy attempts to prevent the dumping of vehicle wastewater into the sea, a common practice that puts swimmers in risk, particularly during the summer.
The “most problematic” beach sections are where the Elche Local Police are putting temporary deterrent signs this week; it is anticipated that the permanent signage will be available starting Easter.
