Accused of owning a small boat carrying thirteen people, including two minors, from the Algerian shore to Alicante in a small boat, two men have agreed to serve two and a half years in prison.
The two defendants will remain in prison in accordance with the sentence after provisionally entering on July 20nd, 2024, after the Provincial Court found them guilty of facilitating illegal immigration and, following an agreement with the prosecution, reduced the sentence from the seven years originally requested to two and a half years.
The boat sailed from the Algerian coast on July 20th with thirteen men—two of them minors—on board who had paid between 3,500 and 5,000 euros for the trip, one of the two served as pilot while the other managed the GPS and managed the weight distribution.
The prosecution claimed that because the boat was just five meters long and lacked lights, tools, communication equipment, safety or rescue equipment, and other necessities, it was totally inappropriate for carrying that many people.
