Following the decline in crime last year—something not seen since 2020 because of the pandemic—Alicante residents may generally exhale with ease. Even while the majority of municipalities are safe, there are some areas where criminal activity has increased.
Even though the province’s population is expanding at the quickest rate in all of Spain, the 0.7% decrease in traffic violations is reason for excitement.
With a difference of about 40% between the location that improved the most and the one that deteriorated the most in 2024 compared to 2023, these numbers represent the average of municipalities that have been able to reduce crime and others where instances have surged.
Therefore, Crevillente is at the top of the list of Alicante municipalities with the highest crime rate. The Ministry of the Interior reports that 1,057 incidents were reported, which is 15.6% more than in 2023.
This concerning rise puts it in the forefront because it is more than twice as high as the second most affected territory, Aspe (+7%), and it calls for tighter security measures to stop the trend.
Crimes
This increase is indicative of an increase in a number of crime categories, with cybercrime and burglaries being of particular concern.
The fact that a kidnapping has taken place in this town of about 30,500 people is startling. There has been a rise of 11.1% in conventional crime.
Sexual assault crimes rose by 4.3%, despite the fact that there were no reported murders and fewer attempted murders.
On the other hand, thefts rose 3.8% and violent and intimidatory robberies rose 8.3%. However, the most concerning statistic is that of burglaries, which increased from 44 to 80 incidents, an increase of 81.8%. In addition, car thefts rose by 33.3%, although from a low number (from nine to twelve occurrences).
Apart from house invasions, cybercrime has become the other Achilles heel, increasing by 45.5%. With a 52.6% surge, cyber frauds defrauded more residents in this category than ever before.
Other communities
Aspe (+7%), Alcoy (+5.9%), Torrevieja (+5.4%), and Novelda (+3.3%) are the other towns that round up the list. Alcoy and Crevillent are the only municipalities that are ranked lower than they were in the middle of 2024.
Many communities that had first experienced frightening rises observed a shift in the second half of the year. In San Juan, Calpe, Crevillent, Alcoy, and Santa Pola, this is the situation.
Crevillent, which saw an increase of 18% in June, has continued its downward trend, while Santa Pola, which had witnessed a rise of up to 22%, was able to reverse the trend.
