The European Consumer Organisation (BEUC) has filed a complaint with the European Commission against seven airlines, including Ryanair, Volotea, and Vueling. The remaining four are EasyJet, Norwegian, Ryanair, Transavia, and Wizz Air. Last year, the Spanish government slapped a €179 million fine on five low-cost airlines.
The consumer lobby, which is supported by 16 associations from 12 countries, believes that all of their tactics are “abusive” and is pressing the EU executive to conduct an investigation.
“We’re taking action against seven airlines that are exploiting consumers and ignoring the EU’s highest court, which ruled that charging for a reasonably sized carry-on bag is unlawful,” says BEUC Director General Agustin Reyna.
In November 2024, Spain slapped a historic 179 million euro fine on Ryanair, Vueling, Easyjet, Volotea, and Norwegian for the same reason. All of them have filed an appeal against the sanction, and they are sure of winning.
Ryanair said today that its hand luggage policy “fully complies with European legislation” in response to the European Consumers’ Organisation’s (BEUC) complaint to the European Commission against seven airlines for “abusive practices” in charging for hand luggage.
The airline stated that this complaint will “confirm” that its policy complies with regulations, which allow airlines to establish rates for both tickets and optional services.
It also stated that passengers can travel free of charge with one piece of luggage measuring 40x25x20 centimetres that fits under the seat in front of them on the basic fare.
