Sira Rego, Minister of Youth and Children, has called for the “total severance of diplomatic, economic, and, of course, arms relations” with Israel, as well as the application of sanctions against the country for its role in the “genocide” in Gaza.
Speaking to the press in the hallways of Congress yesterday, Wednesday May 21st, she stated that the cancellation of the EU-Israel cooperation agreement is a “historic demand” that IU, her political party, has long sought.
As a result, she stated that the proposal from numerous EU nations to review this deal with Israel is “late” but “absolutely essential” to enhance political pressure and “isolation” of Israel’s “genocidal regime” through economic restrictions.
Sanctions on Israel as applied to Russia
Rego, a Palestinian, went on to say that much as the EU imposed sanctions on Russia during its invasion of Ukraine, Israel should be sanctioned to cease its war in Gaza.
The Sumar quota minister said Congress’ bill to embargo military equipment sales with Israel is important and that other measures must be supported.
“We have been clear; we continue working on all fronts to achieve a complete severance of diplomatic, economic, and, of course, arms relations with those responsible for the genocide,” she said.
