The OCU (National Consumer Organisation) has made news once more with its most recent investigation, which focuses on the quality of semi-skimmed milk brands sold in supermarkets. This time, the OCU examined 38 brands of this type of milk, one of the most popular in Spain, with the goal of assisting customers in making informed purchasing decisions. The investigators considered a variety of factors, including nutritional quality, flavour, and texture.
Furthermore, the OCU conducted a study on pasteurisation and sterilisation techniques to ensure the milk was free of hazardous germs. The OCU’s investigation took into account nutritional criteria such as fat, protein, and calcium content, as well as sensory experience, which was assessed by an expert panel. The experts evaluated the flavour, aroma, texture, and overall quality of each brand. The study’s findings revealed substantial disparities among brands, with some receiving extremely low marks for quality and flavour.
The OCU (Spanish Consumer Organisation) has identified the worst milk sales in supermarkets.
The Auchan Semi-Skimmed Milk brand (Alcampo) received the lowest grade, 44 points out of 100. According to the OCU assessment, the manufacturing technique of Auchan Semi-Skimmed Milk is poor, which could indicate that water and permeates are used, thereby reducing both its nutritional content and flavour. Its price of €0.71 per litre does not make up for these disadvantages.
In the same category are Supersol Semi-Skimmed (52 points) and Xoia Semi-Skimmed (53 points). Both brands have a respectable nutritional profile, but their low-quality manufacturing methods and negative evaluations regarding their flavours lower their overall grade. Supersol costs €0.58 per litre, and Xoia costs €0.60. The OCU (Spanish Consumer Organisation) emphasises that, while price may be an appealing aspect, choosing these brands may result in a product of lesser nutritional quality and less satisfying flavour.
And the best ones?
According to the OCU investigation, Hacendado brand semi-skimmed milk, which is offered in Mercadona supermarkets, is the best quality alternative available. This milk, priced at €0.83 per litre, received a rating of 78 out of 100, highlighting its production method and meeting consumer expectations in terms of flavour. This award elevates Hacendado to the top of the semi-skimmed milk brand rankings, outperforming other options on the market.
El Buen Pastor comes in second with 76 points on the OCU’s list of the best semi-skimmed milk brands, trailing only Clesa Bienatur with 75. Other brands in the ranking include Llet Nostra and Pascual, with scores of 71 and 70 points, respectively. Hacendado and Llet Nostra milk are sourced from farms in various Spanish regions, including Galicia, Asturias, and Catalonia, which are noted for their dairy traditions.
The numerous kinds of milk
Skimmed milk is milk that has had the fat removed, lowering the fat level to around 0.1%. This option is especially popular among individuals looking for a low-calorie, low-saturated-fat alternative to help them lose weight or control their cholesterol. Although most of the fat has been removed, it remains a significant source of calcium, protein, and vitamins A and D, albeit in smaller levels than whole milk.
Semi-skimmed milk is defined as milk with a moderate fat level, often ranging from 1% to 1.5%. This milk is a combination of whole and skim milk. It’s great for individuals who want to reduce fat intake without giving up the full flavour of milk. It contains critical minerals such as calcium and vitamins A, D, and B12, but has less fat than whole milk.
Whole milk contains the largest fat content—around 3.5%—resulting in a richer texture and creamier flavour. This milk is ideal for those seeking a beverage that offers greater satiety and energy. It has high levels of calcium, protein, and vitamins A, D, and B12. Although its increased calorie level may not be appropriate for everyone, it is highly recognised for its flavour and used in a number of recipes.
The recommended daily milk intake varies according on age, nutritional demands, and cuisine. Adults should aim to consume 250 ml to 500 ml of milk daily, equivalent to one or two glasses. This contains an adequate amount of calcium, protein, and vitamins. Children’s amounts may be larger, depending on their age and needs.
