National Police officers detained a 53-year-old woman in Elche (Alicante) for fraudulently alleging being the victim of a violent robbery. The claimed victim went to the police station to report that a man on a bicycle passed her at high speed and grabbed her bag, leaving her unable to react owing to the rapidity with which the crime occurred.
In her complaint, she also showed the police evidence that her credit cards had been used by the criminal, as the cards were inside the stolen bag, according to a Police Headquarters statement.
The police launched an investigation and discovered several inconsistencies stated by the complainant. The fact that the allegedly fraudulent payments occurred at the same establishment where the complainant was present caught their attention the most. As a result, the officers thought it “quite implausible” that the culprit and victim were in the same location following the crime.
Furthermore, among the checks conducted, investigators determined that the complainant had requested payment from her insurance company for the sum allegedly cheated. Given the circumstances, officers detained the woman for her involvement in the offence of imitating a crime and fraud.
Police conducted investigations and hauled the inmate before the Elche Investigating Court.
The National Police have stated that filing a false report is a crime and can result in criminal charges. Furthermore, this type of action depletes resources that may be better spent on solving real crimes and protecting real victims.
As a result, he has advised residents to act “responsibly” and always call law authorities if they are victims of a crime, providing accurate information to aid the investigation and ensure “an effective response.”
