Gandia City Council yesterday, May 27th, announced a new initiative aimed at promoting sustainable mobility in the city: the installation of 121 additional bicycle parking spaces in an inverted U-shape, for a total of 242 new bicycle parking places.
Lydia Morant, Councillor for Traffic and Mobility, and AlÃcia Izquierdo, Councillor for the Environment, announced the proposal at a press conference. They highlighted the collaborative effort between the two regions to complete the project.
According to Morant, bicycle parking spots are being scattered across the city, with a focus on schools, green spaces, cultural centres, sports facilities, public spaces, and pedestrian-heavy locations. Existing points of high demand have also been reinforced.
“We want to make cycling in Gandia easy, safe, and practical. This measure is part of our objective to minimise the use of private vehicles while reclaiming public space for people,” the councillor emphasised.
The new car parks have been strategically distributed in areas of daily use and public interest, such as: school and educational environments; parks and green areas (el Jardinet, Plaça Espanya, Parc de Sant Pere); public service spaces (Casa de Cultura Marqués de González de Quirós, Teatre Serrano, City Hall); sports facilities (municipal sports centre, Raval pavilion, Fort Llopis, skatepark at the end of Passeig de les Germanies); pedestrian areas (Passeig de les Ger
Izquierdo, for his part, has described the technical procedures that would be followed before installation. First, a diagnostic was made of the current situation of the municipality’s bicycle parking spaces, including information on their location, condition, and capacity.
“We have prepared a complete diagnosis of the territory and, based on this basis, new locations have been prioritised taking into account the suggestions received from district boards, educational and sports entities, Local Police and citizens in general,” according to him.
Based on this data, an interactive map was produced that displays both existing and new sites, allowing citizens to check where their bicycles can be parked in real time.
“One of the most common complaints from individuals was a lack of information regarding where bikes may be parked. As a result, we developed this mobile-friendly program that not only locates the nearby parking spots but also calculates routes from the user’s current location, just like Google Maps. “This resource will make it much easier to use bicycles as a regular mode of transportation,” Izquierdo remarked.
The initiative has received the support of the Local Police, who have technically validated each venue to ensure accessibility and safety. The new infrastructures are already in the final stages of installation and will be operational in the next days, coinciding with the advent of good weather, making it a perfect moment to promote bicycle use throughout the city.
