Salvamar Leo of the Maritime Rescue Department rescued nine migrants yesterday, Wednesday May 28th, who were on a small boat around 40 miles from Alicante’s harbour. The migrants are currently in Alicante, where the Red Cross has provided basic aid, and all appear to be in excellent health.
A French fisheries inspection vessel that was monitoring tuna catches on the high seas alerted authorities.
The Salvamar Leo left its base in the western portion of the port of Alicante and proceeded to rescue the boat’s nine occupants, all of whom were men.
The maritime rescue vessel has docked near the Temporary Assistance Centre for Foreigners (CATE) in Alicante’s harbour. They are initially assisted by Red Cross staff before being taken over by the National Police, who interview them to commence processes for unlawful entry into the nation as well as to identify and arrest the boat captain.
