Solidarity and sport will combine once more in Benidorm on Sunday, June 1st, with a fun run organised by the Marina Baixa Firefighters Association to collect funds to improve the quality of life for people suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
Paco Pedrera, a firefighter, described the story of the Transcostablanca charity race, which began six years ago and covers 42 kilometres between Benidorm and Alicante in La Ventana de la Marina Baixa.
Following the Pedrera woman’s ALS diagnosis, a parallel five-kilometre race through the streets of the Levante district of the tourist hub has been organised to raise donations for the fight against the disease. Another sufferer, Juan Carlos Unzué, a former football player, encouraged people to participate.
This firefighter also spoke on the radio about his experience as a firefighter, praising his colleagues at the fire station for their cooperation and participation in this event, which already has over 700 registered competitors. He expects to get 1,000 by the weekend.
All revenues, he continued, will benefit the ADELA association of the Valencian Community, an organisation dedicated to assisting patients suffering from this incurable degenerative neuromuscular condition, which requires a wide range of resources to ensure the best possible quality of life.
In fact, Pedrera has insisted on urging the Spanish government to provide a budget for the ELA Law, which remains undeveloped and unfunded half a year after its entry into force.
