Elche City Council is continuing with the Elx Natura Plan, which intends to cover the municipality with shade-giving trees and so encourage the development of green corridors inside the urban area. This week, work began on digging tree holes for planting over 60 large trees on Calle Blas Valero, in the Corazón de Jesús district, as well as providing drip irrigation.
Claudio Guilabert, Councillor for Public Services, stated that “this was a street that needed shade and greenery, so we opted for the installation of deciduous trees, specifically London plane trees.” He said, “These trees have thrived in places like Pedro Juan Perpiñán and Ronda Sur.” Furthermore, this project does not require the removal of parking spaces, as the planting takes place in between the cars.
As part of the Elx Natura Plan, trees will be planted on José Romero López and Antonio MartÃnez GarcÃa streets in Carrús neighbourhood. A total investment of about €100,000 will plant more than 200 trees along the three streets.
“Residents are asking us for more trees to make the streets more pleasant to walk on,” said Guilabert, who pointed out that the city has previously planted over a thousand trees.
The job will take more than two months. “We’re focussing on creating shade by planting trees, but also artificially by installing awnings,” he told me.
