Torrevieja University Hospital has achieved tremendous advances in the treatment of chronic renal disease, with 25% of its patients undergoing home dialysis. This includes 22% of patients getting peritoneal dialysis and 3% receiving home haemodialysis.
Currently, the hospital treats 136 chronic dialysis patients, divided into three modalities: 30 peritoneal dialysis, 4 home haemodialysis, and 102 haemodialysis at the hospital centre.
These findings highlight the department’s commitment to providing treatment choices that allow patients to balance their activities, receive dialysis more easily, and have a higher quality of life.
According to the most recent national report from the 2023 Renal Registry, only 10.6% of prevalent patients in Spain receive peritoneal dialysis treatment. In this context, Torrevieja University Hospital is positioned as a benchmark, greatly above the national average in the usage of home dialysis treatments, highlighting the centre’s efforts to adapt to its patients’ particular needs and improve their well-being.
Home Dialysis
Home dialysis, particularly peritoneal dialysis, provides patients with a more flexible, efficient, environmentally sustainable, and less invasive option, allowing treatment to be completed comfortably in the patient’s own home. This option is especially advantageous for individuals who are unable to attend a hospital on a regular basis owing to personal or professional reasons.
Torrevieja University Hospital’s Nephrology Department underlines its commitment to innovation and complete patient care, advocating for a needs-based approach and providing solutions to improve kidney treatment access and adherence.
It’s worth noting that the Nephrology Service has a Cardiorenal Unit and an ERCA Unit that have been accredited by the ACERCA project, which has one of its primary goals to promote home therapies.
