A 44-year-old man is in isolation in a Valencian Community hospital’s intensive care unit. after establishing that he contracted rabies from a dog bite during a trip to an African country over a year ago.
This was confirmed yesterday, Wednesday June 4th, by Ministry of Health sources, who then contacted the Ministry’s Health Alerts and Emergencies Coordination Centre (CCAES).
The aforementioned occurrence in Africa occurred in July 2024, with the National Microbiology Centre confirming positive rabies testing on May 29th. During his hospitalisation, the patient received rabies immunoglobulin.
According to the same sources, rabies is typically spread through bites from infected animals in regions where it is not controlled, and transmission between humans “is very rare.”
