According to police sources, a fugitive from Belgian justice wanted for serious bodily harm and illegal weapons possession was apprehended in Dénia by the National Police after being discovered as a patient at a hospital in the municipality and released.
The 48-year-old suspect was wanted based on a European arrest order issued by Belgian authorities, and detectives learnt from a call from CIMACC 091 that he was being treated at the aforementioned hospital and was detained after being discharged.
He was wanted for actions that took place between 2016 and 2017 in Tervuren, Belgium. The suspect had escaped from a Belgian psychiatric unit, where he had been detained indefinitely since April 2018 for serious assault and possession and use of a forbidden weapon.
The accused man allegedly attacked two people with a knife in a recreation room because he said they were making too much noise, and he also beat his mother twice while intoxicated.
The Central Investigative Court No. 1 of the National Court is now handling the detainee’s extradition request.
