A 70-year-old man died today, Tuesday June 10th, while swimming in Torrevieja’s El Cura beach, according to the Valencian Community Emergency Coordination Centre (CICU).
Around 1 p.m., the CICU was called in to assist an unconscious male who had been rescued from the sea at Torrevieja’s El Cura beach.

The CICU had deployed a SAMU and a Basic Life Support unit.
Other bathers originally conducted the heart massage on the man, as instructed by the CICU over the phone, until emergency medical personnel came.
Once on the site, the SAMU medical team tried advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other life-saving treatments, but there was no response, confirming the person’s death. An autopsy will finally reveal the cause of death.
Tips
The CICU also reminded everyone that guidance on drowning prevention, among other things, can be found on the Health Department’s Health Emergency Service website, ses.san.gva.es/es/consell.
Although this key urban beach is already crowded on a daily basis, there were no lifeguards on duty just days before summer began. The lifeguard service will be operating in Torrevieja beginning this weekend, June 15th, and will run until September 15th. The service is also available during Easter.
Even if the sea was not fully calm, swimming was nonetheless possible.
