National Police officers detained a 17-year-old juvenile in the Valencian town of Gandia on suspicion of committing a hate crime and criminal damage after allegedly vandalising a photography exhibition with homophobic graffiti.
The investigation began on May 20th by police from the Gandia National Police Station’s Local Information Brigade, after the local city council reported damage to the exhibition “Planning LGBTI Diversity, Art, and Culture.”
The show, which was part of the cultural programme for the Gandia Pride 2025 Festival, which took place in the Valencian town the same week, featured a series of panels displaying LGBT-themed collages. It was situated on Paseo de las GermanÃas, near Casa de la Marquesa.

Officers observed that several panels had been vandalised with homophobic and extremist graffiti. The graffiti was written in black paint and featured slogans like “F***ing b***ard,” “No to the degeneration of the people,” “Gay fagg*t,” and “Pimps.” The graffiti allegedly sought to conceal an image of two women dressed in Valencian attire kissing, as well as an image of the LGBTI+ flag.
Investigators continued their investigation and, after multiple enquiries, found and located the alleged culprit, a 17-year-old teenager who was arrested on suspicion of committing a hate crime and a damage crime.
The young man, who had no past police record, was released after reporting his detention to the Valencia Juvenile Prosecutor’s Office and undergoing an examination before being turned back to his mother.
