A white scum has formed on beaches from Gandia to Guardamar, and the Environmental Service (Seprona) is looking into its origins. For now, the impacted communities have advised residents not to swim until the source is identified. The coast is already marked with a red flag, and certain locations have been closed off to prohibit swimming and contact with the sand, where this material collects.
The white material resembles miniature cork balls, but swimmers should avoid it until its nature is formally determined. This episode is currently hitting the Gandia breakwater, Daimús, Guardamar de la Safor, Bellreguard, Miramar, and Piles, as well as the coast of Oliva.
The Daimús City Council has alerted authorities and is monitoring developments to ensure safety. The other concerned municipalities have already issued a warning to swimmers.
According to photographs and videos supplied by the impacted communities, the debris is white, resembling rice grains, and its composition is still unclear. Witnesses indicate that the debris arrived at the coast on Monday afternoon, accompanied by a black stain.
