Yesterday, Tuesday June 10th, the Guardia Civil saved a swimmer who was unconscious and stranded in severe currents at La Mata beach. The Guardia Civil retrieved and stabilised the 71-year-old man until medical services arrived, and they sent him to the hospital, where he is currently recovering.
At 5:15 p.m. yesterday, someone reported a probable drowning off Avenida de los Europeos. Officers arrived at the site and used binoculars to view a man floating face-up, about 100 meters from shore. The sea conditions were extremely unfavourable, as the area was known for powerful currents.
Needing to act quickly, the officers stripped off their uniforms and jumped into the sea, reaching the unconscious man and pulling him to shore.
Resuscitation procedures were initiated at sea during the rescue operation. Minutes later, the victim regained consciousness and hugged the cops, who were able to bring him to shore and continue stabilising him with the assistance of SAMU medical staff.
The individual was eventually moved in stable condition to Torrevieja University Hospital for medical treatment, where he continues to heal.
Officers from the Torrevieja Local Police also took part in the operation, assisting with the administration of the surrounding area and preserving the officers’ equipment.
Sadly, another incident occurred on a beach in Torrevieja on Tuesday, leading to a terrible outcome.
