According to a statement from the National Police, a 51-year-old insurance broker was arrested in Cartagena for allegedly scamming multiple clients by providing them auto insurance policies for which he collected cash but never delivered to the insurance company.
Several drivers reported obtaining fines of up to €1,500 for not having compulsory insurance, despite having paid the policy directly through an insurance broker.
The investigation revealed that all of the insurance policies had been obtained by the same person at different insurance companies, with the mode of operation being extremely similar in all cases.
The injured parties, under the false pretence of having acquired the policy, paid the insurance broker directly in cash, by Bizum, or bank transfer, without the broker making the subsequent payment to the insurance company, resulting in their lack of obligatory insurance.
After the vehicles were inspected several times to ensure compliance with traffic requirements, the victims were informed that their vehicle lacked obligatory insurance, and fines of up to €1,500 were levied.
National Police officials apprehended the suspected perpetrator, a Spanish national, and took him before the courts.
Additional victims might have been cheated by this insurance broker and are unaware of it. As a result, impacted consumers should check with their insurance company to ensure the validity of their coverage and the payment paid.
