The Guardia Civil is investigating a savage assault on a street sweeper while on duty in the Murcia town of Beniaján, which was reportedly carried out by a retired Murcia Local Police commissioner. The man, 61, underwent emergency surgery and is recovering after reportedly being battered by a member of the force, against whom he has already filed a complaint. The worker, José GarcÃa, described the experience as “unbelievable.”
The incident occurred last Friday, June 6th, about 10:45 a.m., in the Plaza Cronista Carlos Valcárcel of the aforementioned town. Witnesses called 911 to report a confrontation in the middle of the street between two men, one of whom was a street cleaner.
Local police, Guardia Civil officers, and an ambulance were summoned to the area. The injured individual was treated on-site and promptly taken to Reina SofÃa Hospital. The man is already home after leg surgery, which kept him out of the hospital.
“I was cleaning, and I work at PreZero,” the victim stated from his home. Concerning the origin of the fight and subsequent assault, he stated, “What I do is put up cones first thing in the morning so I can access the parking lot with a company vehicle” and do my job. This man arrived in his automobile and removed the cones to facilitate parking.
“He headbutted me”
“I enquired why he was removing the cones, as it was a point of entry and exit. José GarcÃa states, “He told me it was because he felt like it and that if I wanted to, I could call the police.” According to his evidence, the beating occurred at that point. “He butted me square in the head,” he adds.
“He started punching me,” the victim claimed, as the attack progressed.
“I grabbed him to restrain him, we both fell to the ground, and he was even more furious ,” the assault victim said. He emphasises how the person “threw me to the ground and broke my kneecap.” “If they don’t get him off me, I think they’ll kill me,” he said, adding that his opponent “went crazy, as if he’d had a fit of madness.”
In the hospital, “I had to have emergency surgery,” the sixty-year-old says, adding that he has “become incapacitated, I can’t walk.” GarcÃa is currently waiting for an ambulance to transport him to the insurance company for treatment.
I recognised him by sight
GarcÃa claims local neighbours identified his attacker, whom he only recognised by sight as he had left town several years earlier. “After the attack, someone told me who it was,” he recounts. It was then that he learnt it was a police officer, especially a commissioner.
Officers from the Benemérita police station in Torreagüra went to José GarcÃa’s home to take his statement and submit a complaint. A copy of the complaint is expected this Tuesday. “What I want is for it to be publicised, for people to know the facts,” according to him.
Police sources verified that the accused is a former commissioner stationed in the town, and they made it plain that the incident is personal and unrelated to his position on the force. The investigation is underway.
