A man suspected of murdering two senior members of a Scottish organised crime syndicate in a Spanish bar has been arrested.
Michael Riley was arrested in Liverpool by Merseyside Police on the basis of an international arrest warrant obtained by Spanish authorities.
On May 31st, Ross Monaghan, 43, and Eddie Lyons Jnr, 46, were fatally shot at Monaghans Bar in Fuengirola, Costa Del Sol.
Both individuals were linked to the Lyons family, a powerful, organised criminal syndicate centred in the west of Scotland.
According to medical reports, Eddie Lyons Jr. died after being struck by a single bullet outside the bar in front of friends and customers.
CCTV footage also showed the gunman pursuing Monaghan inside the pub and firing further rounds, killing him.
Scottish investigators have assisted the Spanish police with their inquiry, supplying information about the men’s histories.
Following the killings, Police Scotland published a statement claiming there was no evidence linking the fatalities to an existing gangland rivalry in the east and west of Scotland’s central belt.
More than 40 people have been arrested in connection with a series of violent incidents, including alleged attempted murder and firebombings.
The force further stated that there was no indication of a planned shooting in Scotland.
The Lyons clan has had a long-running conflict with the Daniels family.
Monaghan had already been linked to the high-profile murder of dreaded Glasgow gangland member Kevin ‘Gerbil’ Carroll, an enforcer for the Daniels.
He was suspected of murder in a Glasgow supermarket car park in 2010, but was later acquitted due to a lack of evidence.
Monaghan was later shot in the shoulder when dropping off his daughter at school in Glasgow in 2017.
He is thought to have moved to Spain shortly afterwards.
Lyons Jr. was also shot and wounded in a 2006 attack that Carroll was suspected of carrying out.
For about 20 years, the two factions have traded violent attacks.
