What could have been a major traffic accident became a fright with merely material damage. The event occurred on Tuesday, June 17th, on the A-7 highway at km 550 in Orihuela (Alicante), when a semi-trailer truck collided with a Guardia Civil patrol car, whose officers were assisting the occupants of a damaged vehicle.
Two officers from the Orihuela Traffic Detachment had stopped on the hard shoulder to assist four passengers whose vehicle had broken down. For reasons that are still being investigated, an articulated lorry lost control and collided hard with the police vehicle, destroying it completely.
Fortunately, there were no injuries recorded. Both Guardia Civil personnel and the passengers in the wrecked automobile were uninjured.
The Guardia Civil’s largest professional union, JUCIL, blasted the event on social media, urging that the profession be recognised as a high-risk activity. Officers on the road frequently encounter extremely dangerous situations when assisting civilians, as the collision once again highlights.
Authorities warn drivers to use extra caution, particularly when approaching vehicles stopped on the shoulder.
