The National Police Air Unit in Alicante seized two drones from their owners for flying without authorisation, one during the Mascletà (mascletà ) event yesterday, Monday June 23rd and another on Saturday during the drone display in the Alicante port. According to the police, the owners failed to disclose the flight to the Ministry of the Interior, putting public safety at risk,.
The first of the drones was confiscated last Saturday night in the Plaza Mar 2 shopping centre while its owner attempted to photograph the drone display in the Alicante port area. Police discovered that it was flying over a gathering, which is illegal, and the pilot had aircraft more than 1.5 kilometres away when you legally must be able to have visual contact with the drone at all times.
The second drone was apprehended during the Mascletá festival on Monday, June 23rd. Members of the Air Unit were on watch on one of Plaza de Luceros’ rooftops, preventing criminality and dangerous drone flights, when they noticed one of these unauthorised aircraft.
The unauthorised drone had taken off from the port of Alicante and flown above buildings and crowds. A National Police patrol was ordered to the port of Alicante, where the unauthorised drone pilot was purportedly discovered.
Officers apprehended the owner while he was still holding the drone’s remote control, seizing the device. According to the Provincial Police Station, the drone also flew over regions not authorised by the police.
According to the National Police, unmanned aircraft flights must adhere to rigorous AESA (Aesa) rules, and particular events such as the Bonfires (Hogueras) result in a temporary airspace restriction over Alicante. Any such flights within their area must be authorised by the National Police, and in both incidents, the Interior Ministry was neither informed nor authorised.
