The Orihuela City Council will begin implementing the new containerisation system in Orihuela Costa, following a thorough technical study. This research enabled a precise analysis of the area’s existing state and the development of an action plan tailored to its current and future requirements.
The idea is based on a thorough examination of the garbage collection system, considering aspects such as seasonal population increase, urban morphology, and the requirement to satisfy environmental goals established by regional, national, and European legislation.
The Department of Street Cleaning and Urban Solid Waste (MSW) conducted technical research in the Orihuela Costa area to increase the garbage collection system’s efficiency by adapting it to the coast’s demographic, urban, and environmental characteristics. To this end, the main objectives have been defined: ensuring a uniform distribution of containers, ensuring their presence in all residential areas and areas close to homes, regardless of their type; optimising collection routes and municipal resources employed, thereby improving service efficiency and reducing costs associated with its provision; and adapting containerisation capacity to the actual volume of waste generated, especially during the months with greater seasonality.
This study also intends to improve garbage separation at the source by implementing complete collection islands that allow citizens to correctly sort different fractions. It also standardises the collecting system, putting more efficient and modern sideloading containers first while still allowing rear loading at spots where technical constraints demand it.
Proposed Containerisation
The initiative, which is currently being implemented, calls for the renewal and growth of the number of containers available along the shore. This programme will standardise the collection system, enhance important contribution areas, and significantly improve source separation, adapting the service to a changing population density throughout the year.
RocÃo Ortuño, Councillor for Street Cleaning and Urban Solid Waste, emphasised the significance of the new containerisation system for the shore, stating that it is the product of responsible technological efforts. Thanks to this system, we will significantly improve the quality of waste collection, tailoring the service to the unique needs of Orihuela Costa and equipping it to tackle current and future environmental challenges.
